President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni wants the law amended which calls for immediate election of the Speaker after death of the current one.
Museveni attributed the Friday’s election of Hon Anita Among as Speaker to “copying colonialists” even when her predecessor’s body is still in America.
“I was whispering to the Chief Justice and the Speaker to see how to handle this,” he said.
Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah died last Sunday in Seattle America.
Museveni who cherishes tradition said it is abomination in his tribe (Banyankore) to conduct any serious activity while mourning.
“It is madness to have this election when Oulanyah is not buried,” said Museveni.
Adding that, all those who participated in the exercise can be looked at as witches.
“People can think we are witches.”
Museveni cautioned the elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa against celebrating.
“Please don’t out there and celebrate,” he said.
Hon Among defeated opposition candidate Asuman Basalirwa while Hon Tayebwa trounced FDC’s Moses Okot Bitek.
In his speech Museveni clarified that Oulanyah died natural death having been admitted in several hospitals around the world for sometime.
Museveni warned Ugandans against peddling lies that Oulanyah was killed.
“Police will come for you and tell us what we don’t know. I got to know about his sickness when he was admitted in Dubai. He died at the most reputable hospital in the world. Before that he was in Dubai, then here at the Cancer Institute,” Museveni said.
Museveni praised Oulanyah as a great leader who laboured to unite people across Uganda.
The constitution says there can never be any business transacted on the floor of Parliament without a substantive speaker.
Oulanyah had been in Speaker’s office for only 9 months, chairing less than 10 sessions.
