Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of Land Forces of UPDF has announced his retirement from the army.
“After 28 years of service in my glorious military, the greatest military in the world, I am happy to announce my retirement. Me and my soldiers have achieved so much! I have only love and respect for all those great men and women that achieve greatness for Uganda everyday,” Muhoozi tweeted on Tuesday afternoon as the nation celebrated Women’s day.
Muhoozi has risen through ranks to a three star General, a third highest title in the UPDF.
His retirement has since sparked off speculation that the First Son could be leaving army to concentrate on his political ambition.
For many years, there have been rumours of President Yoweri Museveni grooming his son to succeed him.
While responding to that rumour many years ago, Museveni told Aljazeera that Muhoozi would first leave the army and then seek political mandate as a civilian.
In his 28 years of military service Muhoozi has held sensitive positions including commanding Special Forces twice, an elite unit of UPDF.
He also served as a Special Advisor to the President on military operations.
Last year he was appointed Commander Land Forces.
Muhoozi is credited for engaging President Paul Kagame who agreed to open Rwanda- Uganda border which he had closed for 3 years following a diplomatic conflict.
The UPDF administration is yet to speak out on Muhoozi’s announcement.
