It’s a Renowned practice by Great Democracies, Chief Whip defends Proposal for MPs to elect President

NRM Chief Whip Hon Thomas Tayebwa

In a move that has been hailed as a democratic game changer if adopted, the Government Chief Whip and NRM Parliamentary Caucus Chairperson,  Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has said that as the ruling party Caucus, they are yet to receive the proposal to amend the Presidential Election Act where only Members of Parliament will vote for the Head of State.

The highly popular move that seems to have gained ground at the start of the year will be presented to the national ruling party caucus who form the majority in parliament, before being presented to parliament for approval and adoption.

The Chief Whip, Thomas Tayebwa says Ugandans need to appreciate the proposed system since it is one of the known political systems practiced by successful democracies like Great Britain, Italy, Canada, etc.

He says that once the proposal is brought to the caucus, full consultations will be made with all stakeholders as a popular way of popularizing it.

On the other hand, sections of the public especially from the opposition are already reacting against the ‘scheme’ saying it’s intended to deny the people of Uganda a chance to vote for their President and actually meddles on democracy which is considered a constitutional right.
