Two police officers have been shot dead and their guns stolen by unknown assailants in Mityana district.
The incident, reported as a double murder and aggravated robbery occurred on 7.12.2021 at around 4pm at Sebobo village in Sekanyonyi Town Council.
The two deceased police officers have been identified as CPL Alfred Okech and PC Moses Kigongo.
When the officers were attacked, they were on duty responding to an alleged complaint by two victims who claimed they had been robbed of proceeds from their tomato business.
One of the complainants identified himself as Sulaiman Kananya from Nansana. The complainants further alleged that the public had got hold of one and were threatening to lynch him to death. In diligence, the two officers and the disguised victims proceeded to Sebobo village. Little did they know that it was a snare.
“They disembarked from their motorcycles and were led towards Happy Nursery School, where the victims together with others, ganged up and attacked the officers,” reports ASP Racheal Kawala, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) Wamala Region.
According to the Territorial Police in Mityana, the assailants shot and killed CPL Alfred Okech twice to the head and hacked PC Moses Kigongo on the head and neck killing him instantly. They also robbed the two police guns and fled the crime scene.
“The DPC Mityana responded with his team and the canine dog led them to a bar where 15 people were rounded up for further questioning. The search for the two guns has been intensified,” said ASP Racheal Kawala.
Police pledges to do whatever they can to see to it that the right suspects are identified and brought to justice. It is still not determined what the motive of the suspects was.
This senseless violent attack on the two police officers comes not even a week after ASP Immaculate Alaso, the PRO of Bukedi North Region, strongly condemned such violent attacks on police officers while on duty after two officers, PPC Samuel Kiseka and PPC Ibra Alyomu attached to FFU were attacked in Paliisa district on 05.12.2021.
