A police officer in Soroti District has been shot dead and his gun robbed.
The incident happened at around 7pm on Tuesday as the officer, who was attached to the territorial police of Soroti city, identified as Sgt. Gideon Emuria was attacked and shot dead by unknown assailants, at Maroon quarters.
He was on his way to his guard duties at the residence of Justice Alex Makayi Ajiji of Gulu High Court.
It is believed that the assailants escaped from the scene with his gun.
Police was quick to respond and was able to cordon off the thoroughly documented scene.
“Our standby and rapid teams responded to the incident and cordoned off the scene, which was thoroughly documented.
We in addition, reviewed the facts surrounding the incident and a serious manhunt for the suspects has already begun, based on the available leads,” said ASP Oscar Ageca, the PRO East Kyoga Region in his statement.
Sgt. Gideon Emuriat had dedicated his life to serving the public and in his honour the Inspector General of Police together with the entire Police fraternity mourn his loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to his immediate family, friends and relatives,” the statement reads.
He went on to explain that guard duties because guard duties are one of the cardinal functions of the police, there is no reason whatsoever for such senseless acts of violence against officers.
He noted that they believe the murder was a targeted murder but are yet to ascertain the motives of the murder.
“All persons involved will be held accountable and brought to justice,” ASP Ageca assures the public.
The public is strongly warned against approaching the suspects as they are armed and dangerous and is instead advised to ring the police 112 or 999 for any information leading to the recovery of the gun and arrest of the culprits.
