Fresh details have emerged following the death a suspected terrorist who was gunned down by police in Naguru, an upscale suburb of Kampala.
Uganda police earlier on Friday notified the public that Allan Matovu alias Maniha, (36) a resident of Ttula zone, Kawempe succumbed to bullet wounds sustained after he jumped off a patrol vehicle in an attempt to escape from the Joint Counter Terror task team.
Police said he was being escorted to SID Kireka for lawful custody.
“The security officers who have been actively involved in the ongoing counter terror operations, found themselves in a sticky situation after a suspect attempted to escape while being escorted to SID Kireka,” a statement read by CP Fred Enanga indicated.
But sources in Police revealed to this website that the terror suspect was wired with an explosive and in his attempt to detonate it he was taken down.
“He was also a suicide bomber. Our intelligence indicates that he was among the clique of those who bombed Komamboga and Swift Safari bus,” said a source.
“This is the group that had gone to Gen. Lokech’s funeral.”
This website learned that Matovu’s efforts to explode with cops were futile. “After he was shot, the bomb squad detonated the explosive.”
No single Police officer was harmed or injured.
This incident occurred in the wee hours of Friday as the officers were returning from a successful mission and search operation in Kawempe division.
“The officers were returning from a very successful cordon and search operation in Kawempe Division, where they recovered an AK 47 gun , (without a serial number) but with 14 rounds, a bag containing a suicide belt with suspected explosives and an assortment of bomb making materials. The suspected explosive was neutralized at the site on safety grounds,” said Enanga.
Enanga went on to remind the public that encounters with terrorism suspects are usually violent and full of uncertainty.
Contacted for comment on the fresh details, Mr Enanga couldn’t pick our phone calls.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire declined to comment maintaining that what Police said earlier are the only facts.
