Police: Ssegirinya is Facing fresh Treason charges

MP Ssegirinya was rearrested by security

National Unity Platform MP Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya has been rearrested on fresh charges of treason of treason and incitement to violence.

“We want to inform the public that Hon Ssegirinya Muhammad has also been rearrested on fresh charges of treason and incitement to violence by the joint security task team of investigators. He has been transferred to the Special Investigations Division in Kireka for further statement recording and action, “ said Police Spokesperson CP Fred Enanga.

Muhammad Ssegirinya, the opposition Member of Parliament for Kawempe North was three weeks ago charged with terrorism, aiding and abetting terrorism, murder and attempted murder, all related to the killings in greater Masaka region.

This was after being summoned a week earlier to record statements where he was arrested and detained at Masaka Police Station.

He had since been incarcerated at Kigo Prison in Wakiso district despite being granted a Shs20m cash bail on Monday September 20 2021 by Masaka Resident Judge Victoria Nakintu Katamba.

On Monday, 27th September 2021, the International Crimes Division of the high court ordered the immediate release of Sssegirinya from Kigo prison.

According to NilePost news, “Ssegirinya had however remained incarcerated with the prosecution alleging that Mityana MP Francis Zaake who was his surety went out of the country without signing the necessary papers.”

During the hearing at the High Court in Kololo, defence lawyer and Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago asked court to change surety from MP Zaake to MP Patrick Nsanja, which prayer presiding judge, Lilian Alum Omara, accepted although maintaining the terms of the surety.
Fearing his client would be re-arrested outside prison, Lukwago requested the court to order security to respect the law saying, “I implore you to ask the government to respect that law this time and do not re-arrest Ssegirinya like they did Hon Ssewanyana.” He then went on to Kigo to pick Hon Ssegirinya.

However, true to Lukwago’s concerns, the honourable has now been re-arrested on fresh charges.
