Another jailed Rwandan musician Dies awaiting Trial

Jay Polly, a famous Rwandan rapper is dead

Joshua Tuyishime alias Jay Polly has Thursday passed on at the age of 33.

According to local news outlets, the famous rapper died from Muhima Hospital where he had been taken to receive medical treatment after he ‘fell ill’ while in detention.

He passed away on arrival.

The deceased’s trial was slated for December 2, on charges of unlawful possession of drugs.

Other reports indicate that, this was a trumped charge.

The rapper was arrested on April 23 from Kibagabaga suburb alongside 11 different folks, who had gathered at his place.

They were accused of violating President Paul Kagame’s Covid-19 guidelines.

Authorities later alleged that the suspects were in possession of illicit drugs.

Polly began writing and singing revolutionary songs such as Inkongoro Yumushimusi ( The milk can  of a cattle rustler), “Gereza” or prison to show to the Rwandan youth the long arm of the state.

His death follows the demise of a popular gospel singer and a peace activist Kizito Mihigo who, according to government report committed suicide in prison.

Kizito was arrested as he attempted to flee the country to the neigbouring Burundi.
