Kampala Metropolitan police (KMP) North has in custody two suspects who dropped a baby’s empty coffin near Mulago Hospital with message undermining the Ministry of Health (MOH) Permanent Secretary (PS) Diana Atwine.
The incident happened two weeks ago, prompting the Ministry to seek security intervention saying its top officials, Diana and Minister Ruth Aceng had been consistently been targeted by unknown groups.
The placards on the caskets had different information which was all directed and mocking the person of Dr Atwine.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the arrest on Wednesday and identified the suspects as Augustine Ojobela and Shariff Kawooya alias Kijambiya.
Kijambiya is a vernacular (Luganda) word loosely translated as machete.
The two, according to Mr Owoyesigire were arrested on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
“They were arrested after our investigations showed that they directly participated in dumping a coffin with wordings targeting the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Health,” Owoyesigire said.
The feared gang leaders are currently detained at Kawempe Police Station awaiting charges after their file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further direction.
Police said, it also confiscated the suspects’ phones which will be very useful in cracking down the whole gang and its financiers.
