A group of 13 legislators belonging to the ruling party has petitioned the Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja over the exorbitant charges by private hospitals treating Covid.
The legislators who convened at a news conference at Parliament said that private health facilities are taking advantage in these dark days to make a fortune out of desperate patients.
Ugandans have since taken to social media to express concerns over hospital bills people are coughing to either bail out patients are pick their dead bodies.
Some of the private hospitals on spot for charging excessively include TMR, IHK, Case Clinic, Platinum, Victoria Hospital among others.
Confessions from families that have been affected by these charges say you pay an equivalent of a plot of land to be treated in these hospitals.
For example, reports indicate that spending two weeks in these facilities, patients have paid not less than shs 100 million.
At Victoria Hospital in Bukoto, a patient pays an advance of shs 10 million to book for admission.
Kazo MP Dan Kimosho who led the MPs told this website that that in case the Prime Minister doesn’t take action, they are ready to move up to the President to prevail over the matter.
“We will petition the Speaker next, that is if the Prime Minister doesn’t listen to us,” Kimosho said.
Asked if their petition had a timeline considering that the virus is ravaging the population very fast, Kimosho said, three days are enough for the authorities to intervene and save situation.
Kimosho said that whereas Uganda is a liberal economy, it would be disheartening to see hospitals making a kill when taxis, buses, shopping malls, arcades and other business have shut down.
Kimosho said, had it not been Covid-19 guidelines that regulate congregation, majority of MPs wanted to participate in today’s news conference over the matter.
“It is a matter that affects all of us.” He said.
