Haruna Kayondo has been assassinated on Tuesday in Kisaasi a Kampala Suburb as he drove Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala to Najjanankumbi for burial.
Gunmen on two motorbikes intercepted Kayondo who was driving a military SUV under Reg No.H4DF2138, sprayed it with bullets which killed him and Katumba’s daughter Brendah Nantongo Wamala.
Gen. Katumba survived the attack and has since been hospitalised at Medipal Hospital in Kololo.
Those known to Kayondo said he was a calm soldier who acquired military training and worked in Somalia before being deployed to drive Katumba’s lead car at a time he was the Chief of Defence Forces.
After Katumba retired, he retained Kayondo as his personal driver.
A soldier who worked with Kayondo said that while UPDF combated Al Shabaab terrorist in Mogadishu, his car was hit by a landmine but he survived.
“His car was ripped apart but somehow he survived only to die today. May he Rest in Peace,” he said at the crime scene.
During the Tuesday attack, Kayondo tried to race to save Katumba but the assailants shot and deflated the front tyres forcing the car to stop.
Katumba was saved by the bodyguard who exchanged fire with the assassins.
TrumpetNews has since obtained the picture of Kayondo revealing his identity.
