A new Task Force formed to handle national response to the current resurgence of Covid-19 has advised President Yoweri Museveni to immediately place Uganda into a total lockdown for three weeks.
The Task Force comprised of all Ministry Permanent Secretaries and Under Secretaries, epidemiologists and other health experts was chaired by Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine and her Minister Jane Aceng who sat at Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday.
The experts said Uganda is liked to slip into a total health crisis considering the number of Covid-19 cases registered in the recent past with many patients in ICUs and other dying.
Usually the second wave of a pandemic comes with increased cases, or clusters of cases, are identified, along with an increased potential for person-to-person transmission.
Majority of the health experts were in agreement that a total lockdown for three weeks would help to mitigate the resurgence of this virus.
The meeting made subcommittees to prepare for the lockdown in case President Museveni accepts the idea.
Part of the experts have this Friday met the President to discuss with him the deliberations of the Thursday meeting.
Museveni will then meet cabinet on Monday at State House Nakasero to convey the suggestions of the Covid-19 Task Force.
The President will deliver the State of Nation address on June 4 at Kololo Independence grounds.
Some experts however, disagreed with those fronting the lockdown idea insisting that it will deepen the economic crisis which may crash the economy.
Those against the lockdown said government can introduce tough measures to enforce SOPs like closing schools, curfew, resumption of scientific burials, ban on public gathering, among others.
