Bugweri County MP Abdul Katuntu has justified his return to Parliament following a pronouncement he made last year that he was retiring.
Katuntu, a former FDC lawmaker contested as an Independent candidate after quitting FDC following a purge orchestrated by the mainstream party officials against legislators who were perceived as moderates- loyal to former President Mugisha Muntu.
Katuntu at a time headed the investigative committee of Parliament- COSASE.
He was dropped and replaced by comic Mubarak Munyangwa who lost an election last January to Bashir Kazibwe of National Unity Platform.
Katuntu took oath of office on Tuesday at Parliament and defended his comeback; “I had made a pronouncement that I would not stand again, but this time the people I represent sat me down and said you cannot leave at this time,” he said.
He further told the media that: “They said please continue to represent us.”
Katuntu will be serving his 5th term as Member of Parliament after defeating Julius Galisonga, the FDC candidate.
He is among the MPs that criticize the long stay in power of President Yoweri Museveni.
Most MPs have cited similar excuse like that of Katuntu to justify their hold on to power.
