Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has responded to reports that government intends to shutdown internet on Wednesday as President Yoweri Museveni swears in at Kololo Independence Grounds.
Several online outlets and other social media enthusiasts alleged with unauthenticated reports that the National Security Council (NSC) ordered for the suspension of internet access services ahead of President Museveni swearing in ceremony slated citing security reasons.
The allegations aroused panic among the members of the public especially the business community.
Quoting anonymous sources, the reports/posts suggested that security had directed UCC to temporarily block internet, mobile money and bulk sms services.
Further, the stories alleged that Minister of Security Gen. Elly Tumwine had written to UCC over the same.
Speaking to this news site on Tuesday morning, UCC acting Executive Director, Irene Kaggwa said those claiming the internet suspension had “may be written a letter to themselves.”
She said the reports are fabrications and fake news.
“This is news to me. Unless the letter is somewhere traversing the world. I have not seen it,” she added.
