Koboko Municipality Member of Parliament Dr Charles Ayume has unleashed a stinging rebuke to her closest rival Minister Evelyn Anite by telling President Yoweri Museveni that he is the only gatekeeper of Koboko.
The soft-spoken, composed and articulate son of Late Francis Ayume, a former Speaker of Parliament made the verbal artillery on Friday at Kyankwanzi after the President asked him to introduce himself.
“I am Charles Ayume, the only gatekeeper of Koboko,” he said, sending the audience into rib-cracking laughter.
Museveni is currently in Kyankwanzi meeting all newly elected NRM legislators to teach them the party’s ideology before they are sworn in in May.
Ayume defeated Minister Anite in September last year in a hotly contested NRM primary election.
Before the primary elections, Anite said she was the gateway to Koboko and no one would defeat her in an election.
In her concession statement after losing to Ayume, Anite said her loss was a big win to opposition especially National Unity Platform (NUP).
Despite losing the constituency, Minister Anite maintained that she was still the gateway to Koboko although, ‘robbers jumped the fence and stole her victory.’
I didn’t lose as Anite but rather NRM lost and opposition won. Because all People Power and FDC campaign managers were supporting Charles,” Anite said last year.
“That is undisputed. I am the gateway of Koboko although robbers jumped the gate and stole the election.”
However, she said she would not contest against Ayume as independent candidate.
