Sarah Mwesigye Kasheka, the Assistant Commissioner Compliance and Business Analysis at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has left office after failing to clinch her dream of becoming a Commissioner.
Kasheka, has been at the Nakawa Tower for a decade and served in different positions including Assistant Commissioner Field Services, endeavored to become a commissioner but in vain.
She would apply whenever an opportunity arose.
Her last last attempt was last year when she applied to replace Dickson Kateshumbwa, who resigned in May 2020 as Commissioner Customs .
Kasheka had been perceived as a favourite candidate to scoop the juicy position but was haunted by her past which was tainted by ‘illicit’ attempts of trying to enrich herself.
Back in 2010 while serving as Assistant Commissioner Field Services, Kasheka reportedly colluded with Uganda Breweries limited to sneak expired beer back to the market.
Whereas she issued a certificate to dispose off expired 25682 carton of canned pilsner beer which had been distributed across the country for sale by UBL, the alcohol would later be diverted to Downtown Kampala for sale.
She lost out on the job as URA board confirmed Abel Kagumire, the substantive Commissioner Customs.
In URA an Assistant Commissioner and the Commissioner serve for 5 years, renewable once while the Commissioner General serves for 4 years, subjected to renewal.
Sarah Kasheka has served for 10 years as Commissioner Compliance and Business Analysis and Assistant Commissioner Field Services.
However, when an Assistant Commissioner is promoted to Commissioner he or she starts serving a new term, a reason Kasheka fought hard to capture Commissioner Customs position.
She would then be entitled to serve more five years (renewable once) making her one of the long serving officers at the Tower.
Kasheka has left URA along with Vincent Seruma, the spokesperson who also spent 10 years in Nakawa.
In his message to all the URA staff, Mr Seruma said he was retiring as a taxman.
Ian Rumanyika, the URA publicist told this website that Sarah Kasheka leaves URA after her tour of duty ended.
“Her contract of 10 years ended. You only serve for two terms,” he said.
