Supercilious retired UPDF general Henry Tumukunde has Monday left his supporters doused in a pool disappointment after he presented credentials that don’t conform to Electoral Commission (EC) standards, prompting his nomination to come to a stand still.
To political pundits, the outspoken former NRA combatant has failed the first test of seeking to occupy the highest office in the land.
Tumukunde arrived 30 minutes before his allocated nomination time only to be told that his papers weren’t signed by the Commissioner of Oaths after EC teams perused through.
The EC chairman Justice Simon Byabakama said there was a slight anomaly in his particulars and it would require him to rectify the mistake before he is approved by the EC.
Byabakama, however, said the anomaly couldn’t tantamount to cancellation of Tumukunde’s bid.
Tumukunde said the mistake is not a significant glitch and will not disrupt his program.
Gen. Tumukunde is an independent candidate whose slogan is a “Renewed Uganda.”
EC spokesperson Paul Bukenya said the aspirant’s papers had not been fully certified by the Commissioner of Oaths and once they are certified, he will be nominated.
By the time of publishing this story he was seated at Kyambogo with his crew awaiting to be recalled for nomination.
