The NRM Electoral Commission has zeroed on Lydia Wanyoto as the legitimate winner of Mbale Woman MP contest in just concluded, heated NRM primary election.
Wanyoto defeated the incumbent Connie Galiwango Nakayenze.
The Electoral Commission concurred that Lydia Wanyoto garnered 36,281 votes against Ms Galiwango who got 19,113 votes following Thursday’s tally of results from residual election in 58 cells.
Wanyoto got 8, 220 votes against Ms Galiwango who got 241 votes from the residual election, according to Mr John Woniala, the returning officer who announced the results.
“This election has been free and fair and I’m glad that we have finally gotten the winner of this election. I urge all who have lost to rally behind the flag bearer so that we can take our party forward,” Mr Woniala said.
However, Ms Galiwango boycotted today’s exercise questioning the procedure used to determine the cells for residual election and accusing the Mbale City NRM electoral commission of bias.
She had also vowed to contest as independent.
Describing the victory as a “new dawn, Ms Wanyoto said: “This is the beginning of good things to come for the people of Mbale and they have been yearning for this victory for almost a month. I’m happy that it has been delivered.”
The NRM Electoral commission called for residual election after the missing of declaration forms in the affected polling stations.
