Besigye backs Amuriat’s Candidacy: “He defeated an Army Commander of 9 years”

L-R: Gen Muntu, POA and Besigye. All the three have at one point led the FDC.

FDC founder Kizza Besigye has challenged those undermining the current party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s as weak candidate for 2021 Presidential elections to check his history.

Besigye said that Mr Amuriat despite being referred to as a village boy, humiliated his successor in 2017 at Namboole Stadium as the two faced off for the party leadership.

Amuriat who by then was little known in FDC defeated General Mugisha Muntu who was seeking a reelection as party president.

Muntu had led FDC from 2012 to 2017 after taking over from Kiiza Besigye.

Muntu had also led the UPDF, one of Africa’s most revered military outfits for 9 years before he fell out with the regime and joined FDC.

Against that background Col. Kizza Besigye assured the people of FDC that Amuriat is a man of charisma and can lead Uganda as President.

Amuriat picked nomination from the party to contest for FDC flagbearer along with FDC chairman Waswa Birigwa and secretary general Hon Nandala Mafabi.

“I have absolutely no shed of doubt in POA. He was in administration and has also been in politics for a while,” Besigye said.

He added that, “Those underestimating him, how else would he defeat a whole Army Commander of 9 years”

Amuriat supported his candidature saying; “I am such a person who does my work covertly, once I became FDC president I begun to develop ideas.”

He also said that he possesses the required leadership credentials having been inspired and groomed by the former party president RTD Col. Dr Kizza Besigye.

He also noted that his biggest obstacle on his presidential bid is the cracks that have developed in the opposition.

“What is playing out today is not good for the opposition because we are trying to eat into ourselves,” said Amuriat before adding that;

“You have a breakaway from the FDC and forming ANT and going with the few members. You see members of Parliament of the Democratic Party joining NUP.

“My preference would have been for us to go and poach from the NRM and that would be registered as growth of the opposition.”
