Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed optimism that Uganda is soon achieving the middle-income status like her neighboring Tanzania.
Addressing the NRM delegates’ conference virtually on Tuesday, the President said had it not been the Coronavirus pandemic that slowed the economic growth to 3%, Uganda would have a successfully sealed off the middle income status.
He said previously Uganda’s growth was at 6%.
“We are approaching our target middle income status. The per capita GDP is now $908,” he told the NRM delegates who are holed up in a a 3-day summit to choose 9 leaders of the party’s top organ Central Executive Committee (CEC).
The National Delegates Conference will also formally approve the party’s Presidential candidate for 2021 elections who is Gen.Museveni and also prepare for the general elections.
The President said to reach the middle income status, Uganda must have GDP per capital of more than 1000 dollars
“Since 1986 Uganda’s economy has not only achieved recovery but also expanded 23 times in size from 1.5 billion to $37.3 billion,” he happily said.
“Your economy has not only recovered from the catastrophe of 20 years between 1966 and 1986 but actually expanded 23 times,” he concluded.
