The government of Uganda is considering halting public transport following the rise of COVID-19 cases.

Currently Uganda has registered 1500 infections and 11 deaths.

The Minister of Transport Gen. Edward Katumba, took to his personal twitter page and announced that public transport is likely to be stopped because the operators have not adhered to the health guidelines.

Uganda on Sunday registered a record 66 new cases.

“Fellow Ugandans, it has come to my attention that some taxi operators and motorists are not obeying the #COVID19 guidelines in place,” Gen. Katumba announced.

He added that, “with the increasing cases of community transmission, we may be forced to halt public transport.”

The Minister of Health last week said Uganda had become an epicenter of the new COVID-19 wave, warning residents to be very cautious.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned African countries against rushing to lift lockdown saying the new wave of the pandemic could be disastrous.
