The Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama has revealed to the media that eight senior managers informed the commission they were resigning from their jobs on Tuesday.
He dispelled media reports that the eight had been removed from office by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Justice Byabakama was addressing journalists on Thursday at the EC head offices in Kampala.
On Tuesday the commission was thrown into panic when reports emerged that the top officials including Secretary Sam Rwakoojo, head of Public Relations Jotham Taremwa, Head of Finance Joseph Lwanga, Godfrey Wanyoto head of procurement, Technical Support Services head Pontius Namugera, Edgar Kasigwa the database administrator, Lubega Jordan the system administrator and Charles Musuuza a senior IT officer were shown exit over corruption.
Reports further suggested that the purge came amid pressure to award a contract for printing ballot papers to Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC), a joint venture between German company Veridos and the state-owned Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC).
And at the EC there were some disagreements on awarding the contract of printing voter materials to UPPC since it also wanted to take charge of the verification and transmission of election results.
Mr Byabakama thanked these individuals for their hard work and commitment in transforming their country particularly in ensuring free and fair elections.
