Besigye: Even those who Sing People Power don’t Know what Power Means

Col. Kizza Besigye insists that majority of Ugandans do not know what contesting for or having state power means in Uganda.

The opposition heavyweight appearing on NTV morning show on Tuesday was analyzing the current political environment and how best can the country have election under the current COVID-19 crisis which has since prompted the election organizer- Electoral Commission (EC) to announce that political campaigns will be conducted virtually.

But a huge section of political actors has denounced EC’s revised roadmap insisting that elections be postponed.

Kizza Besigye, the FDC founder is among those pushing the narrative that a virtual election which has been dubbed as ‘scientific’ can’t be credible.

He says next year, after expiry of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s term next year, a State of Emergency should be declared until the COVID-19 crisis is over.

Besigye further said that in Uganda, a couple of people can discuss power but don’t know what the actual State Power means.

“By the way not every person knows what power means. Very few of us can describe power,” Besigye said.

“Even those contesting for power don’t know it,” he said.

Besigye in a veiled comment added that even those singing People Power don’t know what they are talking about.

“You hear some singing our power, people power but I wonder if they know it,” he said.

However, Besigye’s comments could spark off debate with many People Power supporters accusing him of undermining him.

But Besigye in his wisdom explained that power can best be described in five ways:

Who controls the mineral wealth (resources), Who makes decisions, Who implements the decisions and pushes for these decisions.

Besigye was quick to dismiss the notion that he wields much more power than other leaders in the FDC.
