In what has now proved to be a blessing in disguise for Ugandan importers who have previously been let down by the tax collections body, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), a story that this website published last Saturday with details of insider dealings that pitted taxpayers against the collectors led by the Customs Enforcement Team, has gotten attention from all sections.
The story that outlined the many ways URA officials were pushing importers to part with huge sums of money as inducement to avoid penalties for under declaration and the unwarranted forceful push for them (importers) to use particularly selected clearing agents is getting the ‘victims’ to talk.
On publishing the story, TrumpetNews was bombarded by testimonies from tax payers who said they had fallen prey to these uncanny ways from URA officials. They said the story was factual and highlighted the dark secrets many had been subjected to while doing business and paying revenue to the country.
