President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extolled the leadership virtues of Pierre Nkurunziza which saw Burundi transform into a stable and peaceful country in 2005.
Museveni on Tuesday visited Burundian Embassy in Uganda to pay his last respect to the fallen African leader who suffered cardiac arrest on June 8.
Nkurunziza, 55, will be laid to rest this Friday at his native home in Gitega.
Museveni remembers the CNDD-FDD leader as a listener who heeded to the advice of fellow East African leaders and retreated from the bush to negotiate for a peace deal in Arusha, Tanzania.
Ever, since Burundi has never been the same following Nkurunziza’s decision. It is this foundation that has seen Burundi peaceful organize a transition, the first ever during the post independence aftermath.
“I visited the embassy of Burundi to condole with the people of Burundi and the family of His Excellency Pierre Nkuruzinza who passed away on June 8, 2020,” said Museveni in a tweet on Tuesday.
He would later add: “Among other things, President Nkurunziza is remembered for accepting our advice to come out of the bush and negotiate with then President Buyoya in Arusha; a move that brought peace to Burundi.
I salute his contribution and his demise at such a young age is simply sad. Hakuna maneno mengi, ni kusema pole peke yake.”
Nkurunziza was succeeded by Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye who already has held a private phone conversation with Museveni.
