Good News: 174 Inmates, Warders Quarantined at Kaiti Prison test Negative for COVID-19

COVID-19 results from Kaiti Prison in Namutumba district is out.

According to the district taskforce, only 174 results returned.

They are all negative. 50 other results are yet to return.

Officials say the 50 were delivered late and so, will return next week.

By press time, Uganda had confirmed 14 new COVID-19 cases, making a total of 755 with 492 recoveries.

Background

A total number of 199 prisoners and 24 prison warders had been placed under quarantine in Namutumba District after an inmate was found infected with Coronavirus.

The patient was at a time incarcerated at Kaiti Prisons in the same district in Eastern Uganda.

The news was announced by Frank Baine, the Prisons spokesperson who said, the case had been arrested from Mayuge District for defying the health guidelines and was detained for 4 days.

“After handing him over to the Ministry of Health, we have gone ahead to quarantine the whole prison, with prisoners and staff there for 14 days. Today (Wednesday), we are expecting officials from the Ministry of Health to come and carry out random sample collecting,” Baine told the media on Wednesday.

The case was immediately handed over to Health officials and is being treated in Jinja District.

Uganda todate has since registered 679 cases of Covid-19, with 120 recoveries and zero death.
