President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pardoned 833 prisoners on public health grounds as a move to decongest prisons across the country following the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Last week, Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine announced that an inmate in Namatumba District in Kaiti Prison had tested positive and therefore 233 inmates and wardens were isolated.

“In the exercise of the powers vested in the President under article 121(1)(a) of the constitution of the republic of Uganda and on the advice if the advisory committee on the prerogative mercy, I hereby grant pardon to the following nationals and non-nationals on humanitarian public health grounds,” Museveni wrote.

He also ordered the non- nationals forgiven must be repatriated immediately.

Below are some of the names of the 833 prisoners who have been granted freedom by the President.
