Eric Mutatsiga, the headteacher of Merry Time Primary School in Mukono District shot by Local Defence Unit (LDU) constable on May 12 breathed his last Monday at Mulago Hospital.
Mutatsiga, was shot at in Wantoni town center during a scuffle that ensued when he tried to protect a teenager who was found selling chapatis a few minutes past 7pm, the time when curfew starts across the country as directed by President Museveni.
An eyewitness (then) said, the ruthless LDU constable then fired 6 bullets and two shattered Mutatsiga’s left thigh and was rushed to Mulago.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigyire confirmed the incident.
But on Monday, the family of Mutatsiga informed friends that had passed on at the facility due to an infection that arose from the bullet wounds.
According to whatsapp messages seen by this website, the deceased’s family has asked authorities to intervene and arrest the constable who shot Mutatsiga but also extend assistance to his young children he left behind.
Burial arrangements are underway in Mukono.
Mutatsiga was the 3rd civilian to be shot at by an LDU officer in less than a week after first two incidents in Masaka and Kween districts where the victims were shot dead.
President Yoweri Museveni had cautioned security forces to desist from using excessive force while enforcing COVID-19 guidelines. He warned that those found liable would face the full wrath of the law.
His comments were prompted by complaints from the public that some members of the LDU force had broken into civilians’ homes while imposing curfew. Museveni reiterated that was illegal.
He activated his trusted aide, Col. Edith Nakalema to arrest any security personnel who violates his guidelines.
It remains unclear whether Mutatsiga’s shooter had been arrested.
