Telecom giants MTN and Airtel have announced that beginning May 26 all mobile money- person to person charges will be re-introduced at 50% discount to standard tariffs for a period of 30 days.
The charges had been scrapped off as a measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by physical exchange of currency notes.
And therefore MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, on 19th March 2020, implemented a zero charge on all Person to Person (P2P) and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions for a period of 30 days.
In recognition of the continued lockdown period, the zero charge was maintained until 25th May 2020.
“MTN UGANDA and AIRTEL UGANDA wish to inform the public that effective 26th May 2020, all MTN mobile money and Airtel money Person to Person ( P2P) transactions on the same network and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions will be gradually re-introduced at a 50% discount to standard tariffs for a period of 30 days,” the telecoms announced in a joint statement.
“All MoMo/Airtel Money pay transactions between customers and merchants will continue to attract zero transaction charges for the next 30 days.
We thank you for adhering to the guidelines put in place by the government and remain committed to enabling electronic money transactions to mitigate the risk of transmission of the Corona virus. Any further changes will be communicated,” the statement adds.
