The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola has reportedly asked Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Joseph Obwana to quit office as a temporary measure to allow police investigate and get facts over his alleged involvement in tycoon Abid Alam’s case.
A source in police who wished to remain unnamed told this website that the suspension of this senior officer was a painful decision taken by the IGP because of his (Obwana) position and seniority.
A separate source revealed that, obwona had been investigated by State House Anti-Corruption unit whose head Col Edith Nakalema presented her findings to Ochola who agreed to take action.
Nakalema had previously caused an arrest of four rogue cops who were conspiring with Abid Alam to evade justice.
The four officers include: Regional CID Officer Wamala, SP. Wanyama Wilber Ostin, DPC Kasanda ASP Owellano Daincl, OC CID Kasanda ASP Beitcra Peter and In charge CID Records Wamala Sgt Azale.
The officers together with businessman Abid were remanded to Kitalya prison last month on 16th on charges of conspiring to defeat justice and releasing confidential police information.
Abid Alam, a perceived powerful businessman connected to the First Family had been arrested by Nakalema on the orders of the President.
A separate source told this website that its true the CID deputy director is on suspension but also warned us that “he is a big man.”
Contacted for a comment, Col. Nakalema couldn’t be reached.
The Director CID AIGP Grace Akullo when contacted about the matter didn’t respond to our WhatsApp messages even after seeing them.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga didn’t respond to our repeated calls.
This website further understands that Mr Obwona was suspended three weeks ago but his suspension has been held as a top secret within police circles and therefore no official in the force could willingly disclose details.
When we contacted Obwana on his personal MTN phone number he said, “I am not the one.”but further scrutiny of the phone particular registration revealed the number as that of Joseph Obwona.
We will run a detailed story as we dig deeper into this to establish and examine the extent to which the system can bring errant officers to account.
The Police Chief Ochola’s phone number couldn’t go through.
