The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has demanded that Minister of Internal Affairs, Jeje Odongo explains what happened to Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake after his arrest and why he ended up being admitted to hospital.
The Speaker, issued a directive Tuesday two days after visiting the legislator who is fighting for his life at Rubaga Hospital.
“I am very concerned about his situation. He was beaten and battered. He told me that pepper spray was sprayed directly in his eyes. He was in Police custody for several days and they must account for his injuries,” said Kadaga.
She added that: “this is a violation of human rights and I direct the Ministry of Internal Affairs to explain to Parliament and the country, the situation of MP Zaake and take action against perpetrators of torture for the MP and other Ugandans. On Thursday, we expect a reply to what happened to MP Zaake and what he is going to do to the perpetrators?”
Zaake was arrested by police from his constituency for breaching the President’s directive by gathering his people and giving them food.
Zaake on Monday told the media that before he was detained at SIU in Kireka, he was first taken to CMI head office where he was tortured for a whole night.
But UPDF spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire dismissed Zaake’s claims saying the MP has never been the Military’s custody.
