President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reportedly donated half his salary to government efforts to fight the Covid-19 disease.
According to @GovUganda, the Official Twitter Account for Government of Uganda, the president also said that he will ask the First Lady, Hon. Janet K. Museveni to also donate half her salary.
“As everyone is joining the fight against the pandemic, Our President @KagutaMuseveni has donated half of his monthly salary to the National Taskforce led by Dr. @RuhakanaR the Prime Minister of Uganda. “I will ask Mama Janet to give 50 per cent of my salary to the taskforce,” @GoVUganda twitted.
It is not yet clear if this is a one-time donation or if the 50% deduction will go on longer than one month.
According to the Second Schedule of The Emoluments and Benefits of The President, Vice President And Prime Minister Act, 2010, the president’s salary is 180 currency points. A currency point is equivalent to UGX20,000.
The President therefore earns UGX3,600,000 per month- this excludes his allowances.
President joins several Ugandans and Ugandan-based private sector and non-profit organisations that have made several billions cash and in-kind donations that include food, medical supplies and motor vehicles.
At April 29th 2020, Uganda’s the total confirmed Covid-19 cases stood at 79. Out of these, 52 have recovered and been discharged while 13 cases remained active but stable and under hospitalisation. A total of 14 patients have been repatriated to their home countries- 6 to Kenya and 8 to Tanzania.
To date, the cumulative number of tested cases stand at 29,832.
Uganda has not registered any Covid-19 related death.
The first Ugandan Covid-19 patient to fully recover from the disease was discharged on April 11th 2020 after testing negative twice for the disease.
Uganda has not registered any new cases in over 72 hours.
Over the last 14 days, the country has also not confirmed any new case in the community as all new cases have been imported.
