Uganda Government in Bean Crisis

Minister Karoro receiving some of the donations.

Minister Karoro Okurut who oversees the COVID-19 fundraising drive has said government has been hit with scarcity of beans which has slowed the distribution of relief food across the country.

The shorrage was a result of cancellation of the supplier Aponye’s contract who allegedly supplied substandard beans that were mixed with stones.

The State Minister for Disaster and Preparedness Hon Musa Ecweru together with Betty Amongi on Wednesday told journalists that the receivers of the relief food complained of the beans and it is true the seeds had stone particles.

Therefore, government resolved to terminate its contract with businessman Apollo Nyagamehe whose company Aponye had supplied food deemed unfit for human consumption.

Hon Karoro against that backdrop said government had no plan B and therefore they are searching for a genuine company which will supply good beans.

This bean shortage has since stalled the distribution of relief food which is mostly posho and beans.

Uganda government is targeting 1.5 million who were deemed vulnerable and have been affected by the lockdown.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni implemented a 35-day lockdown across the country as a step to combat COVID-19 disease in which 55 cases have been registered, 12 discharged after recovery and zero deaths.
