After an engagement with New Vision CEO Robert Kabushenga, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has retracted his statement which was earlier deemed as an attack on government paper.
Muhoozi in his tweet on Sunday night questioned who was in charge of New Vision, a State funded media house that would heap praises on a neighboring nation.
He reminded those behind the New Vision story that Uganda is the greatest nation on the continent, and comparing it with another country would be disastrous.
“But who is in charge of this of New Vision? Is this a government asset or what? How dare they praise another state before our great Ugandan state?” Muhoozi tweeted.
New Vision had adapted a story from AFP titled “Rwanda orders shutdown as infections jump across Africa.”
The story highlighted Rwanda’s effort to combat the pandemic by locking down all busiest places in Kigali as a strict measure.
The report also quoted Uganda as trying to follow Rwanda’s footsteps after President Yoweri Museveni ordered a partial shutdown in his addresses on Wednesday and Sunday.
On Monday Muhoozi issued an apology to New Vision in case he was misunderstood.
“Today, a lot of my close friends in the media have been angry with me for yesterday’s tweet. First of all, I didn’t mean it as an attack on New Vision,” he posted on his Twitter page.
“If they misunderstood me, I’m sorry.”
Robert Kabushenga a known close ally of Muhoozi also used the same platform to inform the public that he had held the meeting with the General and noted his concerns. He added that they agreed on how to handle.
However, Muhoozi insists Uganda shouldn’t be provoked.
“But please do not provoke Patriotic Ugandans. Uganda is always No.1!!”
His comments leave many guessing especially at a time when Uganda and Rwanda have had tense relations.
For many time now, Muhoozi a highly trained UPDF combatant has warned those intending to invade Uganda that it would be a high risk.
Muhoozi is the senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations. He previously commanded SFC, a lethal unit of the army which guards the President.
His father President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni last year complained that Rwanda was operating behind the government of Uganda.
