Uganda’s powerful opposition leader Kizza Besigye has commended government’s aggressive approach in combating the spread of deadly Coronavirus.
But he was quick to accuse the same government of failing the healthcare system.
As the pandemic continues to rattle the world, Uganda registered her first case on Saturday after a 36-year-old businessman tested positive upon his return from Dubai.
This trader from Kibuli, a Kampala suburb remains isolated at Entebbe Grade B Hospital.
Before, the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had directed a partial shutdown by banning huge gathering, closing schools, bars, churches, music concerts and any form of rallies.
After government confirmed a positive case, Museveni advised Ugandans to desist from using public transport and stay home if necessary.
Weighing in on Museveni’s advice, Besigye a qualified medical doctor applauded government for its policies in disseminating information to the public related to their safety.
“They have done quite enough of sensitization. The Ministry of Health has indeed sensitized public on what to do,” he said appearing on NBS TV on Monday morning.
He said combating a pandemic like COVID-19 is the same as taking to the vanguard in times of war to defend a nation.
“This war will need to be fought on four fronts; Deal with the spread. The messages are being spread but there is no action. This particular government is reputed to provide soap during elections. This is the time for them to do so,” he said.
He said those who are not complying with government policies are a danger to themselves.
“God will forgive those who are ignorant but if you get the message and in-spite of that you do everything to negate it, then you are the most dangerous person. You just go to the hottest part of hell,” he added.
He urged Ugandans to stay healthy.
“Smokers and heavy drinkers should be helped to stop because these greatly affect immunity. One of the least things known to reduce immunity is sugar. Please reduce sugar intake,” he said.
“The people here have tried to adhere to the presidential directives. There is some innovation here, they have tried to create their face masks. The taxi stages have bought spray tanks that are stationed on a taxi.”
He said this would be the best time for government to improve the status of hospital since they will be used by prominent officials.
“We have always been talking about uplifting the healthcare systems. But all they would do is to take their families abroad. But now they must know whether the President, Minister or traders they will all use Kiruddu, Mulago and many others.
