Police has clarified on ‘release’ of Gen. Henry Tumukunde indicating that he has been escorted to his residence in Kololo on Friday to conduct search from where he was taken back to custody at SIU in Kireka.
Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga told this website, moments ago that it is a normal procedure to carry out a search in presence of a suspect.
“What we did is normal routine. Right now he has been taken back to custody as he awaits to be arraigned in Court,” Enanga said.
Earlier, we published a report indicating that Tumukunde had been released and placed under house arrest at his Kololo residence.
Enanga added that Mr Tumukunde will appear in a civilian Court since he was retired from the army.
Tumukunde, is accused of making statements that are detrimental to the security of the country.
He faces treason charges.
Tumukunde violated section 23 and 22 of the penal code act after he invited Rwanda government to help those opposing President Museveni’s rule to overthrow him.
His utterances came against a backdrop of his presidential bid which he announced as he sought clearance from the Electoral Commission to consult the electorate a fortnight ago.
Uganda will go into an election next year to choose a new President, Members of Parliament and other related political positions.
Before breaking the ranks, Tumukunde worked as security minister for 1 year and eight months and he was sacked along with police chief Gen. Kale Kayihura.
He then embarked on mobilizing as he sought to contest for Kampala Lord Mayor, but it turned out that he was using it as scapegoat while he targeted the country’s top seat.
This isn’t the first time, Tumukunde he being arrested for issuing toxic statements, in 2005 he was placed under house arrest for 8 years, he would be later cleared by the Court Martial and in 2015 he was elevated by the Commander in Chief to the rank of Lieutenant General and retired from the army. He took on the mobilization role for President Yoweri Museveni in 2016 election.
