A section of Ugandan men has joined women to castigate Gender Minister Peace Mutuzo who announced government’s decisions to ban female genital elongation a common practice called “pulling.”
In this practice, young girls are initiated by school matrons, aunties, herbalists and self styled sex-doctors to pull their labia as a means of preserving culture and enticing men during sex.
Responding to the Mutuuzo’s directive many women and men have swarmed social media platforms to laugh at the Minister while others advised her to concentrate on issues that are affecting the country like corruptions, better education and combating coronavirus.
Below are some of responses we extracted from social media:
MP Mohammad Nserek: Hon Minister Let’s leave matters of culture to cultural leaders. You may cause unnecessary riots.
Remember the Nrm government came from the Bush(munsiko), so don’t just think visiting that Bush is completely useless.
Where I agree though is that it should not be forceful, it must be voluntary to those above 18 .
As for Female Genital Mutilation ,it’s inhuman and degrading and bad.
Leave the sengas and kojjas do their work. Try to visit EKISAKATTE. You will learn more. Hon Nakiwala Kiyinji should try to advise you on that.
WhatsApp messages:
“There serious issues I guess in her department. Let her go and pull if she wants. That is personal decision.”
“She will soon say circumcision in men is genital mutilation!!!
I think. some of these ministers do not known what to do in those offices.”
“It seem she was dumped coz of not pulling”
“Instead of discussing important issues like electoral reforms, time is wasted on cultural norms of a minority.”
“For us we enjoy.”
