The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has launched a 150-kilometre walk to raise awareness of education of the girl-child.
The four-day walk from Kampala, the capital to Kamuli District in Eastern Uganda, launched on Wednesday, 13 November 2019 will also raise funds to revamp St. Katherine S.S. Lira, one of the leading all-girls boarding secondary schools in Northern Uganda.
Speaker Kadaga, who attended St Katherine S.S. for her ordinary level education between 1969 and 1972 said, “We are giving back to the school for making us who we are in the community, and hence promoting quality education. The main purpose of the walk is to create awareness and participation in providing safe space for the girl-child.”
Dr Florence Grace Adong, the chairperson of the fundraising committee in Kampala, said that the walk was a precursor to the main fundraiser to be graced by President Yoweri Museveni.
In November 2017, Kadaga launched the St. Katherine Old Girls Association and contributed Shs 10 million towards the construction of two dormitories at the school.
