Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has hailed the administration of Speke Resort Munyonyo for the hospitality and serviced extended to delegates who attended the just concluded Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) and left behind huge monies which boosts the economy.
Kadaga said that in order to tap the foreign exchange, the organizers came with unique innovations like a large market at the venue which sold plenty of products and eased service delivery to delegates who would access the goods in the shortest time possible.
“The delegates didn’t have to travel from Munyonyo to town to buy anything in between the sittings. Everything was at Munyonyo,” she told this website on Thursday.
Kadaga heaped praises on the facility while making clarifications on false reports and also giving feedback on the just concluded conference.
“The hotels are in Uganda, the people working in these hotels are Ugandans and the food served is Ugandan. So the money spent goes to the economy,” she said.
Adding: “But I want to tell you about the unique innovation. We ensured that there was a market at the venue at Speke Resort Munyonyo and instead of the delegates running to the city in between their sittings they went to the market to buy many things.”
Kadaga further appreciated Munyonyo because many Ugandans got an opportunity to earn foreign currency mostly those who operated the market.
She cited of a female trader who intercepted her as she left executive committee meeting at Munyonyo, fell on the ground because of the excitement of earning $ 1000 which was her first time ever.
“I didn’t know people there, until one day I want walking out of executive committee meeting towards going for lunch and then a woman came and fell in front of me, I thought she was sick but she said she had come to thank me very much because he got dollars and she had never seen dollars in her life, she had got $dollars and this was the first day, and there are many others,” she said.
Asked about her role as President of CPC, Kadaga responded: “my tenure as Chair CPA is to ensure that the rights of members of the Commonwealth are respected; the need to change the CPA Constitution is also key on my agenda.”
The 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Kampala took place on September 22, running for seven days and hosted at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo.
Kadaga has further said that because of the extraordinary services offered by the hotel, some of the delegates from Canada and New Zealand opted to stay after the conference to have a feel of Uganda’s beauty.
“Among the delegates who came, there are those who are still here. For example, the Canada and New Zealand delegation. The money they spend goes to the Uganda economy,” he remarked.
Speke Resort Munyonyo is owned by a hotelier and property mogul Sudhir Ruparelia.
In August the hotel scooped an award of Luxury World Hotel and in 2017 it received the Guest Review Award.
