MTN Mobile Money is under attack and the cyber thugs are targeting customers with a lot of money on their phones.
As we write this, already city businessman Desh Kananura has become the first victim of the new technique which can’t be easily traced as a result you end up ‘donating’ the money to these cyber criminals.
Mr. Desh revealed that the fraudsters tricked his wife with a text message she received from her husband’s phone number requesting to send shs 450000 to a certain number.
After a while she received another text from Desh to send more shs 650000 to another different number which he did.
Whereas it remains that Desh didn’t communicate to his wife, one can argue that he did basing on the text message his wife received.
In fact, the new system of theft leaves the two parties (customers) doubting themselves.
It appears that the designers of the fraud are always monitoring customers that receive huge amounts of money.
Desh took to social media to alert the members of the public not to easily fall texts received from their loved ones, relatives or friends requesting for financial help.
“ATTENTION ATTENTION! MTN HAS BEEN COMPROMISED.
Fully compromised!!! WARNING TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC!
My wife received a TEXT msg this afternoon from MY number asking her to send money to a third party I don’t know? The interesting thing is that the message came from my number.
I didn’t send the message, the number is mine and 1.1 m has been STOLEN. She called MTN and the money was withdrawn immediately. Stand warned that MTN has been compromised and public should be aware of the new scam.”
Desh was optimistic this fresh scam is designed by technology gurus inside the Telecom who know which particular customer has received what amount.
“I will follow it up seriously and I think this is an inside game from MTN because my wife had just received the money. Which to me shows that accounts or mobile money transfers are being tracked by some individuals most likely MTN staff,” he warned.
The telecom’s acting spokesperson Martin Sebuliba when contacted said, MTN doesn’t discuss customer’s information because its confidential before ending the call.
