A section of lawmakers hailing from West Nile region have threatened to resign their positions in the10th Parliament and secede from Uganda should Junior Minister Evelyn Anite be killed by mafia.
On Monday, Anite, while at her office in Kampala said her life was in danger as thugs facilitated by a corrupted cabal were planning to eliminate her.
Her concerns immediately generated debate on social media and among those who didn’t take her claims lightly are MPs from her native home West Nile.
Addressing the media on Tuesday at Parliament these legislators from the 11 Districts that constitute West Nile were led by Ora County Lawrence Songa who was flanked by Maracha District Woman MP RoseAyaka, Denis Lee Oguzu of Maracha East, Pakwach District Woman MP JaneAvur Pacuto and Aringa South MP AlioniYorke Odria among others laid a number of demands they want government to address saying the region is still haunted by the death of former Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga who was gunned down last year.
Songa said that as MPs for West Nile region, they demand an explanation from government on the threats and security of Anite.
Songa said government should pronounce itself on the state of affairs of UTL.
In a joint statement read by Songa, the lawmakers also want Government to guarantee that no Ugandan irrespective of their tribe, affiliation should be vindicated while performing their duties including demanding accountability and also called on the Ministry of ICT, Uganda Communications Commission and Police to investigate and report on phone tapping, poisoning threats and trailing Anite.
