Uganda Airlines in Last Phase of Obtaining Operating Certificate to Kickoff Commercial Flights

Uganda Airlines flights have been assigned radio telephony code “Crested” by International Air Transport Association (IATA) a regulatory body of the world’s aviation industry where Civil Aviation Authority falls.

Codes are used to identify different airlines across the world, for example Kenya Airways was assigned KQ while Korean Air is identified as KA.

Therefore, passengers intending to use Uganda Airlines flights will be booked into Crested.

Uganda recently acquired two new airplanes Bombardier CJ 900 from Canada in a bid to revamp its domestic aviation industry.

The government had suspended the airlines and had sold off all the aircrafts previously used.

Obtaining a code is one of the key qualifications considered in acquiring Air Operating Certificate (AOC) which allows any airline to begin operations.

The Ministry of Works recently announced that Uganda Airlines was in its last phase of securing AOC.

According to a document seen by this website, the top administration of CAA had been notified on June 27 that Uganda Airlines Company Limited has been assigned a three letter designator UGD and a radio telephone (Code) Crested.

“This is to notify you that as per the attached ICAO designator notification dated May 28, 2019, the Three-Letter — UGD and Radio Telephone CRESTED Designators requested for have been accepted and will be reflected in the next edition of ICAO Doc. 8585. Copy of the ICAO designation notification letter is attached for your records,” the letter reads in part.

The letter further adds, “As observed in the ICAO designation letter it is required that you nominate a Focal Point person to create an account and be responsible for determining what Operational Control Centers (OCC) information is published manage access and keep the UPS Control Directory updated.”

TrumpetNews understands that UGAWINGS was a code previously assigned to Uganda Airlines before government suspended its operations.
