Majority of Ugandans have expressed a vote of no confidence in the current management of the Central Bank as more scandals continue to engulf the institution.
According to a social media survey commissioned by TrumpetNews intended to ascertain the public perception towards Bank of Uganda, majority of the respondents standing at 75% have since expressed uncertainty in the Mutebile Administration.
This Twitter Poll running under a question, “primary purpose is to foster price and macro-economic stability and a sound financial system. Given the various scandals at BoU in the recent past, do you have confidence in the current leadership of BoU to do their job well?” attracted a total number of 1689 votes, hundreds of retweets and responses.
In a social media world particularly Twitter, with many respondents boosting of a huge following, the Poll is estimated to have reached three million Ugandans.
Ugandans in fvour of Governor Emanuel Mutebile and his dented administration stand at 25% while those baying for their blood are 75%.
Those with unfavorable view indicated that officials at Bank of Uganda should take a responsibility and resign given the number of scandals that have erupted under their stewardship with most officials’ names appearing at the center of these scandals.
Below are some of the views of those against the poll question (75%);
Sekitto Hamza Isaiah: Yes they have done well in messing up the country , kudos to them Mukwaya: I feel like migrating to Kenya
Kisangirizi Omukooli: You can’t be too smart and get caught. They are just outright amateurs riding on wings of impunity.
Colyne Paul: After the 100billion saga hell no Innoe: not at all and very soon our money will have no value.
#SitukaRoots: They’re even making me hate my own country Bato Tony: They have totally failed their job if they can come to a point of printing their own money without working for it then we are in an economic joke.
The poll comes against a backdrop of a currency saga that has sent shivers down the spine of Ugandans on whether Bank of Uganda officials still have the clout to execute their duty with precision if they can collude to print unauthorized money and share amongst themselves.
The currency scandal which broke last week shows that a chartered plane which shipped money for the country had transported extra 5 pallets of cargo whose owners have not been established by security.
But some officials in government suspected to be collaborating with Bank of Uganda have dismissed a version that extra money was printed and illegally transported on chartered plane.
But the body handling investigations, Uganda Police on Monday addressed the nation with its spokesperson Mr. Fred Enanga confirming that the agency had raided homes of BoU officials arrested and recovered documents suggesting that extra money was printed.
Mr. Enanga’s statement has since raised dust with Media Center and government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo accusing police of telling lies.
But the public wonders whether Media Center has since turned into an investigative Unit.
BoU Governor, Mr. Mutebile who earlier invited State House Anti- Corruption Unit to intervene in the matter on Tuesday feigned ignorance of any investigations.
The current saga exposes Bank of Uganda as a top government entity infiltrated by what President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni usually terms as “Kawukumi”. Kawukumu means bean weevil, and the President uses the phrase to indicate that the institution is “rotten.”
It must be noted that the public is yet to come to terms with the way Bank of Uganda sold and closed 7 private banks illegally.
Ugandans who voted in favour of Bank of Uganda (25%) however, could support their position.
Whereas this poll doesn’t involve other demographics, the twitter cloud is normally top creme of society and represents knowledgeable people who have a huge stake in economic, social and political transformation of Uganda.
