State Minister for Finance in charge of Planning, Hon. David Bahati has Wednesday clarified that Bank of Uganda is being probed over currency note saga.
The soft spoken Minister told Parliament after several legislators demanded a clarification on the current situation at the Central Bank and whether the saga could have an impact on the nation’s economy.
Bahati’s position defends police which had earlier been attacked for peddling lies that several of BoU officials have been placed under investigations and their home searched.
“It is true police especially CIID is investigating reports that a cargo of items was put on a plane that transported the money,” Bahati said.
He added that police wants to establish whether it’s true the cargo contained billions of money allegedly printed by Bank of Uganda officials.
This narrative had earlier Tuesday been dismissed by a government spokesperson, Mr. Ofwono Opondo who told the media that police was telling “lies.”
His revelations contradicted what Mr. Fred Enanga, the police publicist had told the media that homes of some BoU officials were raided and substantial evidence linked to printing of extra money found.
Opondo whose source of information is yet to be ascertained insisted that the extra cargo illegally shipped by the BoU chartered plane belonged to UN and other Kampala businessmen.
