Police has Tuesday accused government spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo of covering up the infamous Bank of Uganda currency saga advising him to “stop interfering with the investigations.”
According to a local daily, Daily Monitor, police officials who asked not to be named responded to Opondo’s barrage of claims against the security agency for “telling lies” after its spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga told the media on Monday that they had raided homes of Bank of Uganda directors and landed on evidence suggesting that there was extra money sneaked into a plane chartered to transport Ugandan currency.
Initial reports suggest that shs 90bn had been transported as extra cargo in five wood pallets cleared by Bank of Uganda and Customs at Entebbe Airport.
Opondo, when the news of shs 90bn began circulating immediately convened a presser to clarify that no extra cash was printed but rather Uganda Government was investigating international bodies whose cargo was found on BoU chartered plane.
Following Mr. Enanga’s statement on Monday, the Media Center boss, again lambasted police for telling lies.
Enanga said that the BoU officials under investigations by police and State House’s Anti-Corruption Unit headed by Lt Edith Nakalema, were still in detention as investigations continue.
“The searches were done in the homes of the officials and a number of documents were recovered. With time, we shall get how much was involved, how much [money] has been recovered, what was genuine [currency],
[and]
what was unofficial, but genuine money,” Mr Enanga said.
But Opondo insists that the investigations center on existence of “extra goods” on the plane.
When this website contacted Mr. Enanga to again clarify on his position, he said, “I am still engaged outside office. I will clarify as soon I get back to office.”
Several members of the public had by press time taken to social media to question whether Media Center where Opondo works had turned into an investigative unit of sorts.
