Parliament of Uganda on Thursday approved a loan request of $104m from Standard Chartered Bank.
The money will fund installation of the second phase of CCTV across all the remaining towns of Uganda.
The request was submitted to parliament’s committee on National Economy last September after government signed a commercial contract worth $120m with Huawei Technologies.
So far, 11756 cameras have already been installed out of 3233 that were planned for different parts of Uganda, State Minister for Internal Affairs Obiga Kania said.
He told the sitting that the CCTV project has already registered success as the number of petty crimes reported in Kampala has reduced because of awareness of the existence of the cameras.
“In fact, in the last 2 weeks I have got reports from about 3 MPs whose cars were vandalized, knocked and the culprits tried to escape, but the cameras were able to trace them and we have been able to recover them. Over the number of petty criminals has also declined. So this project is real and is working,” Obiga said.
