Uganda Willing to Grant Bashir Asylum

Deposed Sundanese President Gen. Omar al Bashir will be given asylum by Ugandan government should he apply for it.

Uganda is one of the top African countries with highest number of refugees.

“Uganda is willing to consider asylum for former Sudanese president Bashir should he apply,” Junior Foreign Minister Okello Oryem has told MPs on the parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

He cited one of the conditions of considering Bashir’s application as being a guarantor to the South Sudan peace talks.

Bashir fell from power five days ago when, State Army led by Defence Minister Awad Ibn Aouf announced the military has arrested Bashir and kept him in a safe custody and also said the army will rule for two year before elections are held.

The Army took over leadership following mass uprising as the populace protested the degenerating leadership or Mr. Bashir on Khartoum streets.

The public has since rejected the military takeover and calls for civilian rule.

Bashir had been Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s longtime friend and the two leaders on several occasions held bilateral meetings.

International Community has urged Sudanese army to hand over Bashir to International Criminal Court (ICC) who is wanted for committing crimes against humanity many years ago.
