Here are Identities of Divers who ‘Drowned’ at Isimba Dam

RIP; Simon Kato

Contrary to our report published earlier Friday indicating that two marine men who died at Isimba dam were employees of ESKOM company, we have since found that the two were permanent workers of a government organization based at Entebbe Airport.

Simon Kato Male and Thomas Munyarugamba on Wednesday drowned at Isimba dam as they executed duty.

Their employer through the Human Resource Manager has since released an announcement in relation to their demise.

“It is with deep personal regret that I inform you of the death of our own-Thomas Munyarugamba and Kato Simon Male our Marine Men. We have just heard the terrible news about their death in water accident. Other details and burial arrangements will be communicated later,” an email circulated to all the staff at the institution reads.

At the time of their death, the two had been hired by UEGCL to conduct an underwater safety operation on the dam.

In a detailed article which ran earlier, we reported how UEGCL lacks divers and has since been hiring from ESKOM, which manages Bujagali hydropower dam.

The Deceased had previous worked temporarily for ESKOM and that is how they got linked to UEGCL.

“At the time of their death they had been on leave and were part timing at UEGCL in Kayunga,” fellow worker at Entebbe said.

They worked in the marine section at Entebbe.

There death was as a result of inexperienced staff which manned the control room after failing to switch off the flood gates and the deceased failed to contain the pressure of the flowing water in the dam.

Some of the individuals who know the two described them as very experienced.
