Police, UEGCL Clash over Drowned Engineers at Isimba

Isimba Dam

Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has dismissed as untrue reports suggesting that two of the engineers have Tuesday drowned at Isimba Dam in Kayunga District.

The 180MW dam was commissioned last month by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by Chinese Ambassador in Uganda.

According to a local news outlet, Daily Monitor, the incident happened when the two expert engineers were carrying out mechanical work in the turbine area.

Daily Monitor quotes Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokeswoman, Hellen Bitoto, who confirmed the news saying however, the identities of the deceased were not yet available.

UEGCL publicist Simon Kasyate when asked whether the dead are Chinese Nationals or Ugandans, he referred us to Ms Bitoto who confirmed the incident.

“We are not aware of the said drowned engineers. As far as we know, we can account for all our engineers as UEGCL and all those employed directly by the contractor CWE,” he said.

Adding that, “so let policewoman Bitoto tell you whether the Engineers who drowned are Chinese or Ugandans.”

TrumpetNews is digging deep to verify the death reports.

Isimba Hydro Power Project (HPP) which adds 183MWs to the national grid was commissioned by President Museveni on March 21, 2019.

It is located 4km downstream of Simba Falls on the River Nile, approximately 50km downstream of the Source of the Nile.

The project site is about 21km from Kayunga town and about 65km from Jinja Town.
