We Aren’t Focusing on 2021, Says Opposition

The opposition in Uganda has come out to respond to ruling party’s top organ CEC, which Tuesday agreed that its chairman rules Uganda as long as he wants.

The Decision to endorse President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for 2021 polls and beyond was reached in a 5- day retreat convened at Chobe Safari Lodge in Nwoya district.

After discussing several issues in relation to the economy, governance, internal constitution amendments, among others, the meeting unanimously fronted Museveni as the Presidential Candidate in the next general elections.

“To emphatically recommend to the membership of the movement and its organs that His Excellency Yoweri Museveni our leader and General of the African Resistance, continues leading the movement and the state in 2012 and beyond- as we eliminate the bottlenecks to transform,” a resolution of the organ reads.

Reacting to the decision, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Ms. Betty Aol Ocan told this website on Wednesday that whatever happens in NRM is “none of my business” because the opposition “has a lot of work to do” and “other serious issues to handle.”

She said, her group is focus on many challenges affecting democracy and governance other than wasting energies on what he referred to as “expected.”

“Our focus as opposition isn’t the next election but rather how do we remove Museveni from power today. We still refer to previous election as a sham because everyone knows our victory was robbed,” Mukono MP Betty Nambooze supplemented.

She said, discussing Museveni’s sole candidature is diversionary because the country expected it.

“Does NRM have an option. Show me someone else who can lead NRM apart from Museveni,” she questioned.

Asked why the opposition would choose to ignore CEC’s declaration of Museveni’s “life rule” the Leader of Opposition responded, “because we have serious work to do.”
